Oprah on oxytocin – the trust aphrodisiac of desire

by admin on Jan.13, 2010, under Uncategorized

Writing on Oprah Winfrey’s online magazine, respected evolutionary psychologist Helen Fisher discusses the chemical underpinnings of love and sex.  Stating that ‘the most powerful aphrodisiacs are already inside of our bodies’, Dr Fisher explains that the three crucial aspects of relationships – lust, trust, and love, all have a hormonal basis.  Regular readers of ‘Oxytocin Spray’ will already know which of these foundations are produced by oxytocin, but here in her own words, Fisher tells of the powerful aphrodisiac properties of oxytocin, the ‘trust hormone’ :

Feelings of trust and attachment are fostered by the chemical oxytocin. In a study conducted at the University of Zurich, couples who used a nasal spray containing oxytocin before discussing an ongoing marital conflict were more likely to engage in friendly, positive communication than those who didn’t take a whiff. You can stimulate oxytocin naturally with touch. Hold hands while you watch TV, trade massages, or sleep in each other’s arms.

Single women might find it hard to commit because of lack of oxytocin, reports the Times of London.

Says Hasse Walum, the leader of the study :

“The hormone oxytocin seems to influence female pair-bonding more, and we are planning to investigate if variation in the gene coding for the receptor for this hormone is associated with women’s pair-bonding behaviour.”

Oxytocin hardwires men to cuddle their babies too.

After measuring 80 couples’ levels of oxytocin — the “cuddle hormone” that supports touching, hugging, holding and trusting others — an Israeli doctor found that fathers as well as mothers post increases after childbirth. Oxytocin has a powerful effect on the brain, making people feel less anxious and more calm, trusting and connected.

Oxytocin is usually studied in connection with women and bonding, labor, delivery and breastfeeding. But fathers of newborns actually have oxytocin levels comparable to mothers’, based on Dr. Feldman’s findings

Altruism linked to oxytocin genes

Researchers at an Israeli university have identified a link between altruistic behaviour and a specific variation in a persons DNA that acts as a brain receptor for oxytocin.
